Dulwich's historical roots stretch back to 967 AD when it was a hamlet outside London, granted by King Edgar to his thane Earl Aelfheah. It is thought to originate from "Dill," a white flower, and "wihs," meaning a damp meadow, signifying "the meadow where dill grows." Ownership of the land passed from Harold Godwinson to King William I of England following the events of 1066.
