Covent Garden London Market - Magnus Rodwell

Witness the astonishing sight of a performer gracefully swivelling on a ladder, leaving the crowd in awe. A young assistant joins, adding to the spectacle that demands applause and triggers exuberant behaviour, holding the audience in a state of enchantment. The artwork, crafted by London's M. Rodwell, immortalizes this fleeting yet extraordinary moment, brimming with cherished recollections.

Once a wholesale distribution hub, Covent Garden underwent a significant evolution. By 1960, escalating congestion rendered the square impractical. However, spurred by public outcry, protective measures were instituted in 1973 to safeguard the surrounding structures from redevelopment. Subsequently, in 1974, the market relocated to Nine Elms, nestled amidst Battersea and Vauxhall in southwest London. The central building of Covent Garden lay dormant until its revival as a shopping centre in 1980, as beautifully depicted in the pencil drawing.
